Treating high school athletes after they have went to college

I have been an athletic trainer for several years. I have treated a few athletes after they have went to college. I was advised by one of my colleagues that i should not do that. They were concerned that the relationship were to unprofessional and inappropriate. Do you think this could be a problem?

  • We have athletes that come back from college regularly and ask for advise on an injury.  I would take it as a complement because these kids obviously trust your expertise.  Liability wise it is not a good idea to treat the person unless you are covered with your own personal insurance.  I always ask them if they saw their athletic trainer and what is that person doing to help their situation.  If they are not comfortable with the new ATC involved in their care you can always call the new ATC and help bridge the gap or facilitate a new connection.
